Abstract:Objective: To observe the curative efficacy of Anshen Kangdian decoction combined with carbamazepine and Sodium valproate acid and to discuss its influence on anti oxygen free radicals and inflammatory reaction in treating epilepsy. Method: Ninety-two patients were randomly divided into control group (46 cases) and observation group (46 cases) by random number table. Patients in control group received 0.2-1.0 g carbamazepine tablets orally at 3 times daily and 0.4-1.6 g sodium valproate tablets orally at 3 times daily. Based on the treatment of control group, patients in observation group added modified Anshen Kangdian decoction treatment. Patients in both group received 6 month periods of treatment. Seizure situation and quality of life were evaluated before and after the treatment. Besides, a long-term electroencephalogram test was conducted. Levels of serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β(IL-1β), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were detected before and after the treatment. Result: The clinical curative effect of control group was superior to that of observation group (P<0.05) by the chi-square test order data. Scoring of epileptic seizures in observation group was less than that in control group, while the quality of life score in observation group was higher than that in control group after treatment (P<0.01). The number of epileptiform discharge cases in observation group was less than the number of control group (P<0.05), while the number of epileptiform discharge declined or disappeared in observation group was more than the number of control group after treatment (P<0.05). Levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1 and MDA in observation group were inferior to those in control group (P<0.01), while serum SOD level of observation group was higher than that of control group (P<0.01). Conclusion: Therapy of Anshen Kangdian decoction combined with carbamazepine tablets and Sodium valproate acid can reduce seizure frequency, improve the quality of life in treating epilepsy. Its mechanism may be related to eliminating oxygen free radicals and reducing inflammatory reaction.
