Objective: To study anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect of water extract of Sauropus rostratus. Method: The LD50level of the water extract was determined by modified Karber's method. Dimethylbenzene-induced auricle edema in mice,carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats and cotton ball-induced granuloma in mice were respectively performed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract (14,7,3.5 g·kg-1). Mouse twisting numbers induced by acetic acid and mouse pain threshold after heat stimulation on hot-plate tests were respectively performed to investigate the analgesic effect of S. rostratus. Result: The LD50level of water extract of S. rostratus. was 68 g·kg-1, the auricle edema induced by dimethylbenzene in mice, catton ball-induced granuloma in mice and carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats were inhibited significantly by water extract of S. rostratus. (P<0.05 or P<0.01), water extract of S. rostratus could remarkably reduce mouse twisting numbers (P<0.05 or P<0.01), but could not improve pain threshold. Conclusion: The water extract of S. rostratus had anti-inflammatory effect and analgesic effect, the researches could provide a scientific basis for developing and utilizing of S. rostratus.
